Training Description

2025 MCGPA :  Molecular Sieve Dehydration and Expander Plant Operations Training

The heart of an NGL Extraction facility (typically known as an expander plant) consists of the Molecular Sieve Dehydration Unit and the Expander Plant equipment.  These unit operations are downstream of the Amine Acid Gas Removal Unit, which meets the required CO2 concentration for processing (if required).  Typical operating temperatures of an Expander plant are cryogenic conditions, often in the range of -100oF to -154oF.  This requires all water in the gas to be removed to prevent hydrates or water freezing at these conditions, which is achieved in the Mole Sieve Dehy Unit.  The most common type of Expander plant in the U.S. is the Gas-Subcooled Process (GSP) which will be the focus of this discussion.

This training session will cover the fundamentals of Molecular Sieve Dehydration and Expander Plant Operations, including common operating issues and possible mitigation methods.

Topics of the session to be covered:

  • Molecular Sieve Dehy and Expander Plant Overview
  • Sales Gas and NGL Specifications
  • Important Physical Properties of Natural Gas
  • Molecular Sieve Dehydration
    • Adsorbents
    • Adsorption / Regeneration Cycle
    • Equilibrium Loading / MTZ / Life Factors
    • Bed Loading Considerations
    • Causes for Insufficient Dehy Performance and Possible Mitigation Methods
  • Brazed Aluminum Heat Exchangers
  • Expansion Refrigeration
    • JT Valve Operation
    • Expander / Compressor Operation
  • GSP NGL Extraction Plants – Integrating the Pieces
    • Demethanizer Column
    • Ethane Recovery
    • Ethane Rejection
    • Operating Issues and Concerns
