MCGPA 2023 Tulsa Natural Gas Symposium
Sponsored by Jasper
As a kick-off to Tulsa's Oktoberfest festival, the GPA Midstream Midcontinent Chapter will be hosting its Natural Gas Symposium on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Downtown Tulsa. This event will have six technical presentations regarding various aspects of midstream facilities. See the agenda below for the specific topics and speakers. PDH hours will be available at the end of the event. Following the event, transportation will be available from the hotel to Oktoberfest Corporate Night.

Agenda
7:30 – 8:30am Registration & Breakfast
Sponsored by ISTI Plant Services
8:30 – 9:00am
Welcome Speech
Mark Hochstetler, MCGPA President, Energy Transfer
9:00 – 9:45am
Critical Equipment Foundations
Andrew Simms, Product Engineer, Techmar Equipment Foundations
- There are a number of considerations to properly design and install critical equipment systems and assets with the goal of optimizing operating reliability: reducing operating costs, extending Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF), and increasing the foundation life-span. This technical session provides an overview into different design considerations and installation best practices for achieving optimum performance from the equipment system.
9:45 – 10:15am Coffee Break
Sponsored by Sunland Construction, Inc.
10:15 – 11:00am
Methane Emission Baselining—Understanding the Impact of Your Facility Methane Emissions and Volumes Through Direct Measurement:
Alan Vidal, SR VP of Technology, Ecotec
- To ensure facilities operate within current requirements a direct measurement baseline is essential. This baseline assesses sources and volumes of gas leakage, allowing owners, operators, and service providers to identify areas of concern. Tunable diode laser spectroscopy (TDLAS) and mobile data collection technologies provide reliable data for decision making.
11:00 – 11:45am
Optimized and Sustainable PFP (Fireproofing) Safety Systems to Mitigate Credible Release Events in the Midstream Sector:
Chris Burst, Global Product Line Manager — Fire, Carboline
Stuart Bradbury, Global Segment Manager — Fire, Carboline
- Passive Fire Protection (PFP) materials play a crucial role in safeguarding safety and environmentally critical elements, particularly structural steel, in the midstream sector of industries like oil, gas, and petrochemicals. These materials are designed to provide fire resistance to protected elements for a finite period, ensuring the integrity of essential infrastructure and protecting human lives, the environment, and valuable assets from credible release scenarios.
11:45am – 1:00pm Lunch
Sponsored by Vinson
1:00 – 1:45pm
Advancements in Retrofits for Existing NGL Recovery Plants:
Scott Miller, P.E., Principal Engineer, UOP Gas Processing — Ortloff Engineers
- Gas plants today are required to maximize profits by optimizing both the recovery of natural gas liquids (NGL) based on market prices and plant throughput to satisfy their delivery contracts. Most standard cryogenic NGL recovery plants constructed over the past 20 years using Gas Subcooled Process (GSP) technology which have limited product recovery and flexibility compared to newer NGL recovery technology. However, existing GSP and even older plants can be upgraded with more recent retrofit technology for better plant performance using proven retrofit techniques.
1:45 – 2:30pm
Methane Mitigation on Natural Gas Compressors:
Mike Wasson, Director of Engineering — New Ventures, Archrock
Ryan Gentry, Director of Sales — New Ventures, Archrock
- Compression is responsible for a meaningful percentage of the total emissions footprint for both upstream and midstream operators. Because of that, technologies and solutions that are able to cost effectively reduce emissions associated with compression are an important part of operators' objectives moving forward. This presentation focuses on two sources of emissions from reciprocating compressors; rod packing leakage and blowdowns and includes detail on key features such as ease of applicability for brownfield and Greenfield applications as well as no requirement for facility power. Design specifications are discussed alongside performance data from both laboratory and actual field operations.
2:30 – 3:00pm Dessert Break
Sponsored by Oxbow Environmental, Inc.
3:00 – 3:45pm
Nanoparticles In Pipeline Cleaning and Oil & Gas Processes:
Bud Allred, Partner & NACE Level II Senior Internal Corrosion Technologist, E&P Services Group
- This presentation is on nanoparticles used in the oil and gas industry. The presenter is the inventor and patent holder of this process. It has been used by major oil and gas producers across the United States.
3:45 – 4:00pm Closing Remarks
