MCGPA Midstream is hosting 2 Virtual Training sessions in April. The first occurs on April 21st and the second is on April 22nd, both are from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. (CDT). The featured speaker, Rick Kroeker - Measurement and Controls Engineer at Enable Midstream, will discuss Control Valve Basics.

Training Topic: Control Valve Overview and Specification Basics

Summary: Defining the design conditions/requirements for a control valve application is the most
important step (and sometimes the most difficult) in the control valve engineering
process.

This session will cover the basics of control loops, control valve types, and breakdown of a control valve assembly. The minimum requirements for specifying a control valve for a particular application will be presented. Given this minimum information, control valve suppliers should be able to properly size and specify a control valve for the application. The discussion will focus mainly on control valves in natural gas service but concepts could be adapted for other fluids (i.e. liquids).

Training Cost: FREE
Date: April 21st, 2021
Time:  10:00 am - 12:00 pm (CDT)

Agenda:

Control Valve Overview and Specification Basics

  • Control Loop Overview
  • Control Valves vs Regulators
  • Control Valve Assembly
    • Control Valve Body (Rotary vs Globe)
    • Actuator
    • Instrumentation
  • Basic Design Parameters
    • Piping and Mechanical
    • Process Conditions
    • Control Valve Instrumentation
    • Installation Requirements
    • Delivery Lead time

Training Topic: Control Valve Attributes and Specification Review

Summary: Understanding the control valve assembly and its performance characteristics is important so one can verify the specified control valve is correct for the application.

This session will explain valve sizing, valve characteristic, seat design, positioners, and other important items that impact the performance of a control valve. Line items that one may see on a specification sheet from a supplier will be explained so one can ensure a control valve will meet the required design conditions/requirements.

Training Cost: FREE
Date: April 22nd, 2021
Time:  10:00 am - 12:00 pm (CDT)

Agenda:

  • Control Valve Sizing
  • Control Valve Characteristic
  • Control Valve Positioners
  • Control Valve Seats/Seals
  • Control Valve Noise
  • Control Valve Specification/Quotation Review
